We returned to our test fixture to compare 15 modern road and gravel bike stems using repeatable deflection measurements, recorded weights and stiffness-to-weight calculations. Road & Gravel Stem Stiffness Testing
We returned to our component test fixture to evaluate 15 modern road and gravel stems. Using the same repeatable approach behind our earlier testing, we measured deflection, recorded weight and calculated stiffness-to-weight ratio so riders can compare different design priorities with objective data.

How the Stems Were Tested
Repeatable Setup
Each stem was installed at its specified torque and tested three times, with the results averaged.
Controlled Load
After a 20 lb preload, the fixture was zeroed and a 100 lb load was applied 10 inches from the stem centerline.
Comparable Sizing
The group primarily used 110 mm stems with closely matched angles to limit variables between models.
How to Read the Results
Deflection
Lower deflection means greater stiffness under the same load. Higher deflection indicates more compliance.
Weight
Weight is useful on its own, but the lightest stem is not necessarily the stiffest or the best choice for every rider.
S/W Ratio
A higher stiffness-to-weight ratio is better when comparing how much rigidity a stem provides for its mass.
What the Numbers Suggest
Maximum stiffness is not automatically the best result for every rider. Comfort, vibration damping, aerodynamics, cable integration, fit and weight can all influence the right choice. Our testing also suggests that modern internal-routing requirements can add weight without producing a proportional increase in stiffness, while flatter aerodynamic shapes tend to allow more deflection than rounder structures.
