Best Tucson Gravel Bike Routes

Explore the different gravel riding areas around Tucson and Southern Arizona, from Redington Pass and mixed-surface Tucson routes to Patagonia, the San Rafael Valley, the Santa Rita Mountains, northern Tucson and the backside of Mount Lemmon. Compare example rides, terrain, difficulty, route conditions, bike setup and planning considerations before choosing a route.

Tucson gravel covers very different terrain in a relatively small area. We can ride steep desert roads near town, link pavement with flowing singletrack, head south into Patagonia's grasslands or climb remote dirt roads into the Sky Islands.

This guide focuses on a short list of representative rides. Our Tucson Gravel Routes page holds the broader collection and will link to more detailed area and individual-route pages as they are completed.

Use the collection to compare routes, then open the individual map before riding to review the current route, elevation profile and navigation options.

Tucson & Southern Arizona Gravel Route Collection

We use the collection as a quick overview of the terrain and locations covered in this guide. The featured routes below show how different a Tucson gravel ride can feel depending on whether the day centers on desert roads, singletrack, open grasslands or a remote mountain climb.

Redington Pass & Fantasy Island

East Tucson gives us two very different versions of desert riding. Redington turns away from the city on rough backcountry roads, while Fantasy Island keeps the mileage and climbing lower but introduces riders to flowing, cactus-lined singletrack.

Redington Pass

67 miles | 3,669 feet | Hard

Redington Pass is our shorter introduction to Tucson's signature gravel climb. Pavement gives way to sustained dirt climbing above the Sonoran Desert, with loose surfaces, washboard and rough descending adding difficulty beyond the mileage alone. We carry enough water and repair equipment for an exposed desert ride and stay especially alert for weekend OHV and vehicle traffic.

Fantasy Island - Bunny Loop

17.2 miles | 381 feet | Moderate

This 17.2-mile route builds a longer ride around the flowing Bunny Loop side of Fantasy Island. We get minimal climbing, sandy washes, cactus-lined turns and manageable desert singletrack without committing to the more technical Lone Cactus side. We follow current trail-direction signs and posted reroutes.

Patagonia & the San Rafael Valley

South of Tucson, Patagonia replaces the Sonoran Desert with canyon roads, higher grasslands and the open country of the San Rafael Valley. Our shorter Patagonia route gives us a substantial destination ride without requiring the longer commitment of the 50- and 80-mile options that will live on the dedicated Patagonia gravel page.

Patagonia 30

30.2 miles | 1,746 feet | Moderate

Patagonia 30 is our more approachable introduction to Harshaw Canyon and the area's higher grasslands. It provides a substantial destination ride without committing to the longer routes deeper into the San Rafael Valley. We watch for local work and mining traffic and avoid the dirt roads when recent rain has left them muddy or damaged.

North Tucson Desert & the Backside of Mount Lemmon

North of Tucson, the terrain ranges from fast desert cross-country riding to a major dirt-road climb into the Catalina Mountains. The 24HOP course is a compact singletrack loop, while the backside of Mount Lemmon is a long mountain route with substantially greater climbing, exposure and commitment.

24HOP

16.0 miles | 1,202 feet | Moderate

The 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo course is a classic Sonoran Desert cross-country loop north of Tucson, combining rolling singletrack, short jeep-road sections and fast, exposed riding. The lap distance is manageable, but repeated short climbs, cactus-lined trail and rougher sections reward confident handling and steady pacing.

Backside of Mount Lemmon / Control Road

54.8 miles | 7,034 feet | Expert

The Control Road climbs from the Oracle side through remote mountain terrain on steep, increasingly rough dirt. Higher sections can move beyond comfortable gravel-bike terrain, so we choose the bike and turnaround from current conditions and carry extra water, food, layers and repair supplies.

Mount Hopkins

Mount Hopkins takes the guide into the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. The narrow observatory road, sustained climbing, elevation and limited services make it the most remote route included here and a ride where conservative planning matters more than finishing the entire file.

Mount Hopkins

39.7 miles | 5,592 feet | Remote Expert

Mount Hopkins is a sustained Santa Rita Mountain climb on a narrow dirt road with limited guardrails and regular observatory traffic. Public access ends at the signed gate, which is our turnaround. We carry extra water, food, layers and repair supplies.

Choosing a Bike for Tucson Gravel

A capable gravel bike is the right starting point for most of these routes, but setup should follow the terrain. Tire volume, tread, casing strength, gearing and repair capacity become increasingly important on Redington, Patagonia, Mount Hopkins and the backside of Mount Lemmon.

Bunny Loop, 24HOP and rougher sections of the Control Road can move into mountain-bike terrain. Current conditions and the rider's handling ability should determine the bike choice rather than the route label alone. Our Tucson gravel bike rentals are picked up and returned through the 6th Street Location.

Before You Ride

We never treat a saved route as a guarantee of current conditions. Monsoon storms can cut channels across roads, winter weather can affect higher elevations and sustained rain can turn Southern Arizona clay into wheel-stopping mud.

We check the weather, daylight, access and recent conditions before leaving. We download the route for offline navigation and carry sufficient water, food, sun protection, layers, tire-repair equipment and a charged phone.
